It had been a while since that day.  That fateful day when you stood in front of his door and waited, when you called and he hung up on you.  It had been, in fact, two whole months since that day.

And yet, not much seemed to really change.

You got closer to other kids, made other friends.  People that had been just background noise before were now more near and dear to you than ever. Not quite as close as he had been, but...close enough.

But you still missed him, unfortunately.  You missed him more than you would have liked to admit.

{without you

the ground thaws

the rain falls

the grass grows}

But life must go on.

{without you

the seeds root

the flowers bloom

the children play}

You were at the park downtown with your newer friends and a couple of old ones.  Roxy was there, of course, with a flask swinging from her cute magenta belt, and her precious kitty, Mutie, on a cat leash trotting next to her.  Her flask, though, was filled with cherry cola, since she was trying to stop drinking, which you found to be a wonderful thing.

Rose, Roxy's younger sister, was there too.  You had started to get closer to the wizard-loving, snarky young goth.  You loved her dark politeness and intelligent quirks, and she appreciated your off-the-wall sense of humor.  She also appreciated the beer you occasionally carried around in your purse, since Roxy had locked all the alcohol up.

Then there was John, a sassy nerd with a spunky and slightly pessimistic attitude.  He and you had something in common, and that was that you'd both lost Dave.  Dave still answered his calls and had him over every once in a while, but it wasn't the same, or at least that was what John said about it.  You talked to John on your own a lot nowadays, filling up a little bit of the gaping hole Dave had left in your heart.

Karkat, a red-eyed kid from school that was about a year older than you, hung around a lot too.  He had terrible eyesight and shock-white skin, and he dyed his white hair a dark navy blue most of the time, which you found to be an interesting quirk of his.  You'd been distant with him until very recently, when you offered to help him with his "edjy rebelloos" eyeliner.  From that day you two had been much, much closer.  You were developing small and very squashable feelings for the boy, but thing was, maybe you didn't want to squash them.

You were having a fantastic time, messing around on the empty playground you were all too old for and chasing the ducks and climbing some of the low-branched trees.  Someplace in the back of your mind, you were missing Dave, but the hole was, albeit very slowly, closing up as time went on.

{the stars gleam

the poets dream

the eagles fly

without you}

You all piled into John's rickety, 1994 pickup truck at about eight o'clock, John at the wheel, Rose and Mutie in the cab, and you, Karkat, and Roxy laying flat on your backs in the bed of the truck.  It was very early spring, so eight was still late enough that you could see the stars.

"Shit, you guys, I found Orion's Belt!"

"Literally anyone can find the Orion's Belt, you fucking idiot."

"Oh come on, Karkitty!  Have some cherry cola and lighten up, will ya?  The stars look great tonight, so don't ruin it!"

Karkat kept grumbling, but didn't complain when you demanded he helped you find the Little Dipper.

All of a sudden, though, your phone rang out the tune of a sick beat, and you froze.

{the earth turns

the sun burns

but i die

without you}

"Don't pick it up, [nickname]."

"I have to."

"Who's calling you?"

"Don't do it."

"[f/n], who the fuck is calling you?"

Your eyes filled up with tears, but you quickly blinked them away, focusing on the light of your phone screen and sitting up straight.  You picked up.

{without you

the breeze warms

the girl smiles

the cloud moves}

He told you he missed you.  He told you he was sorry.  He didn't tell you that he broke it off with Jade, but you knew enough about the both of them to infer.

Had he really valued your friendship that little, that he could let a two-month-long relationship with an underclassmen get in the way?

{without you

the tides change

the boys run

the oceans crash}

You told him you were sorry too.  You told him that things were different now, and you weren't sure if you could forgive him.  You didn't tell him how much saying all that hurt you inside, or how huge the hole he had left in you was--is.

{the crowds roar

the days soar

the babies cry

without you}

There were silent tears running down your face.  You wished he'd just leave you alone, let you take the time to heal instead of prying your wounds open wide all over again.  But he was begging you to come back to him, be his friend again.  He asked you what he did that made you upset.  He asked you why.  You told him it didn't matter.

{the moon glows

the river flows

but i die

without you}

"Whatever, gotta go, Dave."

"Kay.  I love you, [f/n]."

Click.

{the world revives

colors renew}
